Ilitha Projects has successfully completed the control centre refurbishment project for Kendal power station’s Water Treatment Plant.

Ilitha Projects was awarded the refurbishment contract following the completion of the conceptual and detail designs in 2008. The earlier design stages were critical to identify Kendal’s overall requirements for the control centre and to translate these into a workable solution that provided the ergonomics and functionality of a world-class operations area. Ilitha’s Control Centre Division was key in providing design expertise and applying their extensive experience to formulate the final interior design.

The refurbishment programme was challenging, it had to accommodate the changeover of the control system which was being installed simultaneously. However, Ilitha’s on-site team applied rigorous project management principles to the work and were able to successfully deliver on the contract milestones.

The project involved the installation of a new iCON 5 control console which is designed and manufactured by Ilitha. The console accommodates up to 12 LCD monitors and 8 PC’s housed in the base which is cooled with integrated extraction fans. The control centre and its adjacent offices, conference room and kitchen were all constructed as part of the project. This involved construction of the walls, ceilings and floors in addition to the fitting of custom designed cabinets and lockers. The control centre was also supplied with new furniture and appliances. Lighting designs were run on software simulation packages prior to installation to confirm the correct lux levels were being attained.   new air conditioning and extraction system was installed to provide the correct climatisation in the centre. Modes Cloete, Eskom Project Manager for the Water Treatment Plant at Kendal, said that the timing of the Water Treatment Plant Control and Engineering Room Refurbishment was very critical for the overall project (Civil and C&I portions). Any delays from Ilitha on the civil work would have caused standing time to ABB (C&I Control System Replacement Contractor). However, the Ilitha project was completed on time, within budget and at a high level of quality. The Kendal Water Treatment Plant Operations team is very happy with their new Control Room - overall a job well done.

Jorge Nunes, Eskom Lead Engineer for the Water Treatment Plant at Kendal, said that the design and implementation teams of Ilitha complied with the Eskom Corporate Identity requirements to ensure a highly compliant ergonomic design that meets the Operating Personnel requirements. The Ilitha team worked in a collaborative approach with Kendal Projects team towards an execution that not only achieved the final technical specifications, but was able to keep all the role-players and stakeholders involved and motivated towards successful project completion.
