Wireless Network Planner

Job Title: Wireless Network Planner – WTTH (Wireless to the Home)

Job Purpose:

The Wireless Network Planner will be responsible for designing, planning, and optimizing the wireless to the home WTTH services. The role involves planning for new hub sites, capacity planning for internet services, backhaul link planning and provide high level support for operations teams. The position requires frequent travel to project sites as well as strong project management skills to coordinate and deliver network initiatives effectively. The planner will work closely with cross-functional teams and report to the Manager Network Planning

Key Responsibilities:

1. Wireless Network Capacity Planning

  • Conduct end-to-end capacity planning to ensure high availability and scalability of WTTH and FTTH internet services.
  • Monitor network utilization trends to forecast growth and recommend infrastructure upgrades.
  • Provide core planning function for point to point and point to multipoint wireless links.
  • Plan and ensure the implementation of new high sites, wireless, power and backhaul.
  • Design and maintain IP addressing schemes, routing protocols, and backbone configurations.

2. Backhaul Link Planning

  • Plan and document backhaul link routes and capacity (e.g., East London to smaller town and similar long-haul links).
  • Coordinate with field teams and vendors for wireless deployment, testing, and commissioning.
  • Evaluate link performance and recommend enhancements for optimal throughput and redundancy.

3. Network Security & Governance

  • Ensure core network infrastructure is secure, monitored, and compliant with best practices.
  • Assist in designing and enforcing network access policies, firewalls, and encryption protocols.
  • Support incident response processes and root-cause analysis for security breaches.

4. Reporting & Documentation

  • Regularly update the Manager Planning on planning status, risks, and milestones.
  • Maintain thorough documentation for all network planning, configurations, and changes.
  • Generate and present performance, capacity, and incident reports.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in network planning and architecture within a fibre or ISP environment.
  • Strong understanding of RF principles and experience with RF testing methodologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of IP/MPLS, DWDM, GPON, Ethernet, and routing protocols (BGP, OSPF).
  • Understanding of OSS/BSS architecture, including billing systems.
  • Familiarity with security protocols, firewalls, VPNs, and monitoring tools.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Mikrotik (MTCNA), Ubiquiti (UBWS,UBWA), or equivalent vendor certifications.
  • PMP or Prince2 (for project implementation understanding).
